What is the Difference Between Standard Microneedling and RF Microneedling?

When it comes to advanced skin treatments, microneedling is a firm favourite for improving texture, tone, and overall skin health. But with the growing popularity of RF Microneedling (Radio Frequency Microneedling), many are left wondering – what exactly is the difference between the two?

At Ink Illusions, we specialise in transformative treatments that help you feel more confident in your skin. Whether you’re looking to reduce the appearance of scars, stretch marks, or fine lines, understanding your options is key to getting the best results. Let’s break down the main differences between standard microneedling and RF microneedling, so you can make an informed decision.

Standard Microneedling: The Basics

Standard microneedling – sometimes referred to as collagen induction therapy – uses a device with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny punctures stimulate your body’s natural healing process, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins vital for youthful, plump skin.

This treatment can improve the appearance of:

  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Mild stretch marks
  • Uneven skin tone

The procedure is minimally invasive and typically requires little downtime, making it an appealing option for those new to aesthetic treatments.

RF Microneedling: A Technological Upgrade

RF Microneedling takes standard microneedling to the next level by combining the mechanical action of microneedling with the power of radio frequency energy. In addition to the needle penetration, RF energy (thermal) is delivered deep into the skin layers, generating heat that further boosts collagen and elastin production.

This dual approach offers several enhanced benefits, including:

  • Tighter, firmer skin
  • More effective treatment for lines and wrinkles
  • Reduced skin laxity
  • Improved skin texture and tone
  • Enhanced results for stretch marks and scars (although not as effective as MCA inkless tattooing)

Because the RF energy penetrates deeper than standard microneedling, it is particularly effective for treating more advanced skin concerns and delivers longer-lasting results.

What’s the Experience Like?

Traditional microneedling isn’t considered painful at all – just a little scratchy in some areas so no numbing cream is used – the imflammatory response is actually needed for best results.  However, RF Microneedling is much more intense if treating deeper skin issues and this is performed using numbing cream to minimise discomfort. RF microneedling can feel slightly warmer due to the heat generated by the radio frequency. Post-treatment, you will experience some redness, similar to a mild sunburn, which usually subsides within a day or two.  With RF Microneedling, depending on the energy settings (which depends on what you are having treated) you can at higher levels see tiny stamp marks on the skin (darker or lighter) which can take a while to fade.

RF microneedling sessions may take slightly longer and are often spaced further apart to allow for deeper skin regeneration.

Which One is Right for You?

The right treatment depends on your skin goals and the condition being treated. If you’re targeting early signs of ageing or mild scarring, standard microneedling might be enough. However, for more stubborn issues like fat loss, cellulite, and skin tightening, RF microneedling is often the more effective solution.

At Ink Illusions, we offer Fractional RF Microneedling as part of our advanced skin rejuvenation services. Our expert practitioners are trained to tailor each treatment to your specific skin type and concern, ensuring optimal results.
